The Secret to Staying Organized for Good!

The most frequently asked question I receive from clients pertains to the one hack that will make staying organized stick for good. "I just don't think I'm wired to stay organized.", said one client. Whether your issues with organization can be attributed to an overwhelming work schedule, forgetful children or major illnesses, I believe everyone can adapt a system that works for them. It takes a commitment to self and discipline to implement new life changing habits.

"We cannot solve our problems with the same mind that created them."

- Albert Einstein

Reprogram your mind

Albert was certainly onto something. There is more evidence of the brain's neuroplasticity and exactly how to reprogram your it. Changing your thoughts alone can help with neuroplastic gains. Novelty, challenge and intention are essential for cognitive change. Why do you want to learn this skill (i.e. increased productivity or quality of life) and how challenging is it? Consider setting a goal or incentive (i.e. practice the ritual for 5 days straight). We're aiming for progress not perfection so don't give up when you mess up or forget. Grace and self forgiveness are key! Regular mindful practice is also a great place to start to refresh your mind and improve attention, memory and emotional regulation. Always seek the help of a professional and do your own research.

Establish a healthy relationship with routine

Grab a notepad and journal what comes to mind! First, think back briefly to your childhood. Did you move around a lot? How stable did you feel? Next, think about your relationship with routine today. What emotions arise when you think of routine? Is the idea of routine restrictive or boring? Routines do not have to be dull. In fact, creating routines or rituals that automate certain actions can free up time and energy to be used for more challenging tasks. For example, say your evening ritual after work is to put your shoes and keys by the door, place your bag on a hook, wash your lunch-ware then light a candle and take a shower. Small actions such as keeping certain items in the same spot everyday can make all the difference. Our habits create the program that runs in the background of our mind.
