How to Organize Toys

I'm underplaying how excited I was for this recent organizing project for two toddlers’ toys. Like most families, the toys were stored in the living room. Although the parents had installed three Ikea cabinets and drawers to house everything, it was chaos behind closed doors. Here are the key takeaways to help you and your kids keep toys from taking over your home.

Categorize toys in sizes of small, medium and large

Start by taking everything out of wherever it is stored and assessing each individual item. From there, sort the toys by type into containers. I really love these clear containers from target because you can get them in small, medium and large. They also seal very well, are affordable and easy to clean. I placed all figurines, action figures, little people and animals into a small container. Toys of the same type that were large in quantity such as magna-tiles went into 2 medium containers. Store the largest toys like trucks or music instruments in drawers like pictured above or into large totes (below)

Use Montessori-type labels to help with clean up

I love these Montessori style labels found on amazon. I played around with making my own and although I found a template on Canva, printing them as a stickers was not cost effective. I highly recommend the ones above as the pictures help your children identify what goes into each container and overtime they will recognize the names as well.
